Waffle griddles, or waffle irons as they are commonly called, allow the home cook to make perfect waffles every time. Some models make simple waffles, while others make the Belgian thick waffle. Depending on the manufacturer, a waffle griddle will make between 1 and 4 waffles at a time. Using a waffle iron is a simple and easy task; basically, you pre-heat and cook for the recommended amount of time.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Waffle griddle
  • Paper towels
  • Non-stick spray
  • Waffle batter
  • Heat-proof spatula
  1. Step 1

Wipe the griddle with a damp paper towel to remove any dust on the iron.

  2. Step 2

Set the thermostat to "3" or "medium" if your model is equipped with this type of setting.

  3. Step 3

Plug the griddle into an electrical outlet to allow it to preheat. On most models, a green light will come on to signify that the griddle is ready.

  4. Step 4

Spray the surface with non-stick spray if the iron does not have a non-stick coating.

  5. Step 5

Pour in about 1/2 cup of waffle batter in the center of the iron. Spread the batter over the griddle using a heat proof spatula and close the lid. If your model came with a specific measuring cup, be sure to use that to measure the batter.

  6. Step 6

Cook the waffles for approximately 4 1/2 minutes. If your model has extra lights, the light will turn red while the waffle is cooking and green when the waffle is done. For other models, plan on 4 1/2 to 5 minutes for the waffles to cook through. Lift the lid slightly after 4 minutes to check and make sure the waffles are not overcooking.

  7. Step 7

Lift the waffles using the spatula and slide onto a plate for serving.

Tips & Warnings
  • A simple batter for waffles can be made by combining 2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 Tbsp. sugar, 1 Tbsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp. salt, 1-3/4 cups milk, 6 Tbsp. vegetable oil and 2 large eggs. Let the batter sit for 5 minutes before making the waffles. These amounts will make approximately six sets of waffles in a four-waffle iron.
  • Allow the waffle iron to cool completely before cleaning. Use damp paper towels to remove any waffle residue from the iron. If heavier cleaning is needed, use a damp, plastic kitchen scrubby.
  • Some models of waffle irons come with additional or reversible plates so that the appliance can be used as a griddle or grilled sandwich maker.
