Jock itch is a fungal infection that strikes teenage boys and men, causing itching and a red, patchy rash in the groin or anal area. Caused by the tinea cruris fungus, it can be triggered by wearing clothing that is too tight or by moist conditions in the groin. Over-the-counter and prescription medications can be helpful in treating jock itch. Making a few simple changes to your grooming routine can help ensure that you don't develop further infections.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Antifungal medication
  • Powder

    Treatment

  1. Step 1

Use over-the-counter antifungal creams, sprays and ointments on affected areas to clear the infection. Antifungal products are available at drug stores without a prescription.

  2. Step 2

Apply drying powder or antifungal powder to your genitals after you shower or bathe. Using powder will help keep your groin and genital area dry and make it an unfriendly environment for the fungus. If frequent infections are a problem, applying powder on a daily basis may be a good idea.

  3. Step 3

Visit your doctor if you have frequent infections, an infection that hasn't gone away after two weeks of home treatment or a severe infection. Your doctor can prescribe stronger antifungal products than those available over the counter.

  4. Step 4

Ask your doctor about prescription oral antifungal medication if other medications are not helping. Be sure to tell your doctor if you are taking other medications, as oral medication can interfere with some.

  5. Step 5

Follow up with your doctor if your condition is not improving or if you are experiencing pain. Scratching the rash can lead to a secondary bacterial infection that will require you to take antibiotics in addition to antifungal medication.

  6. Prevention

  7. Step 1

Dry off completely after bathing. Fungus thrives in moist conditions, making it important to pay special attention to skin folds and other areas that may not be completely dry after a quick pass with a towel.

  8. Step 2

Choose loose clothing. The friction of tight clothing can be enough to start an infection. If frequent infections are a problem, consider wearing boxer shorts rather than briefs.

  9. Step 3

Wash athletic supporters after you wear them to kill any lingering fungus. Wearing clean underwear every day can also inhibit the growth of the fungus.

  10. Step 4

Avoid sharing clothing with other people. According to MedLine Plus, jock itch can be spread through sharing unwashed clothing or thorugh direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person.

  11. Step 5

Dry skin folds and areas of sweaty skin throughout the day. Carry powder with you if you tend to sweat heavily, and apply as needed to keep your skin dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Treat athlete's foot promptly. The same fungus that causes athlete's foot also causes jock itch, and the fungus could travel to your groin if the foot infection is not resolved promptly.
