Fishing poles should be stored straight and true. Leaning a pole against a closet wall or leaving it on the floor can warp the pole over time, reducing its effectiveness. In the case of expensive bamboo rods for fly fishing, a warped pole is essentially useless because it will be extremely difficult to cast accurately.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fishing poles
  • Two-piece storage rack mounted on a wall
  • or
  • Two pieces of wood crown molding
  • Metal shelf brackets and screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Jigsaw or hand saw
  • Electric drill
  • Cup hooks
  • Safety goggles

    Vertical Storage

  1. Step 1

Attach a two-piece storage rack to the wall using simple mounting hardware, such as bookshelf brackets or the parts that come with a store-bought hanger. The top half of the holder is attached to a wall with two screws. The lower half attaches either with two screws or sits on top of two brackets mounted on the wall with screws. Both pieces should be about 3 feet apart, parallel to each other and the floor.

  2. Step 2

Insert the top of the poles into the notches on the top of the rod holder. These notches are often made of rubber to hold the poles vertically.

  3. Step 3

Place the pole butts on the lower piece of the holder, which is a shelf with a lip on the front edge to prevent the rods from slipping off and hitting the floor.

  4. Step 4

Make an improvised pole holder with two pieces of wood crown molding, available from a hardware store. Cut the two pieces into equal lengths with a jigsaw or handsaw.

  5. Step 5

Cut notches 1/2 inch wide and 1/2 inch deep along one piece of the crown molding for as many poles as desired, leaving about 4 inches of space between notches in case the reels will remain attached to the poles for storage. Make the cuts with a jigsaw or handsaw at two angles to remove a triangular notch of wood

  6. Step 6

Attach the notched piece of crown molding to the wall at the desired height using two screws. Attach the lower piece to the wall with screws and metal mounting brackets so that the lip of the crown molding is the leading edge.

  7. Step 7

Set the poles into the holder using the notches and lower shelf for support.

  8. Horizontal Storage

  9. Step 1

Screw cup hooks at least 1/2 inch in diameter about 3 feet apart and level to each other for each pole to be stored horizontally.

  10. Step 2

Twist the hooks so the open side faces upward.

  11. Step 3

Place the pole on the hooks with the handle close behind one of the hooks. This will keep the pole balanced, especially if the reel remains attached.

  12. Step 4

Install a store-bought horizontal pole holder by attaching each side vertically to the wall with screws. The rods hang horizontally on the two wall-mounted holders using the hooks on the holders.
