Create a delicate, light and airy butterfly chandelier that you can illuminate with a single-bulb light fixture. Commercial butterfly chandeliers are often made with heavy paper, but this one is made with copper foil. The key to making a mobile-type chandelier is to have the strands evenly balanced around the circumference for visual effect as well as for them to hang properly. This chandelier will hang from hooks attached to the ceiling, so your strands can be as off-balanced as you like.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Butterfly template
  • Copper foil
  • Marker
  • Household shears
  • Upholstery needle
  • Monofilament line
  • Measuring tape
  • 12-inch craft ring
  • Jeweler's glue
  • 4 cup hooks
  1. Step 1

Print templates from online sources or find the outlines in a child's coloring book. Make all of the butterflies one style and size, or create a chandelier with larger butterflies at the bottom of each strand, topped with successively smaller butterflies.

  2. Step 2

Trace 30 butterfly outlines onto the copper foil. You are making six strands, each with five butterflies. If you prefer to make graduated strands that all look the same, trace six butterflies each in five sizes or styles. Look for copper foil rolls at local craft stores.

  3. Step 3

Cut the butterflies from the copper foil. Insert an upholstery needle through the center of the copper between the wings of the butterfly. This is the hole you will use to hang your butterflies on the chandelier.

  4. Step 4

Cut six 36-inch strands of monofilament line. Tie a triple overhand knot at one end of each strand.

  5. Step 5

Lay out the butterflies in vertical rows according to the way they will hang on your chandelier. You should have five butterflies in each row.

  6. Step 6

Thread one strand through the butterfly on the bottom of your strand design. The knot will keep the butterfly from falling off of the strand. Measure 2 inches up the line from the butterfly and tie another triple overhand knot. Thread the next butterfly in your design. Measure 2 inches up the line and tie another triple knot. Repeat this twice more until all five butterflies are on the strand.

  7. Step 7

Repeat Step 6 five more times until all of your strands are complete.

  8. Step 8

Tie the strands around a 12-inch craft ring. Space them evenly. Glue the knots in place onto the craft ring with jeweler's glue. Apply a drop of jeweler's glue to each knot on each strand.

  9. Step 9

Hang the butterfly chandelier with cup hooks inserted around a single-bulb light fixture.

Tips & Warnings
