Many cooks prefer to use stainless steel cookware in the kitchen to cookware that has a nonstick surface. While there are many benefits in using stainless steel pots, you must understand the cooking process that occurs with stainless steel. When you understand this process, you will be equipped to prevent your stainless steel pots from sticking and your cooking will be an enjoyable experience.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stainless steel cookware
  • Cooking oil or butter
  • Stove top
  • Food
  • Tongs
  1. Step 1

Place the stainless steel pot onto the stove top and set the burner to medium heat. Leave the pot on the heat source for approximately 3 minutes to preheat.

  2. Step 2

Add cooking oil or butter to the preheated pot and lower the heat setting to medium-low. Allow the butter to melt or the oil to warm up for about 10 seconds.

  3. Step 3

Place the food into the pot and allow it to begin the initial cooking process. Resist the urge to turn it right away because it will usually stick if you turn it before it has had time to cook for several minutes. If you are cooking something in small pieces, stir lightly after about 30 seconds.

  4. Step 4

Turn the food if you are cooking something larger after allowing it to sear for 2 to 3 minutes.

  5. Step 5

Cook the food on the second side until it cooks sufficiently in the center. If you are stirring chopped items, continue stirring lightly until the food cooks sufficiently.

  6. Step 6

Remove the food from the stainless steel pot. Remove the pot from the heat and allow it to cool.

  7. Step 7

Wash the stainless steel pot carefully after it has cooled to ensure that you remove the oils and food residues from the cookware. Leaving food residue on the cookware will make foods stick when you cook.

Tips & Warnings
  • The key to preventing most foods from sticking to stainless steel cookware is preheating the stainless steel cookware prior to adding the food and then cooking the food at a lower temperature. Stainless steel cookware will hold the preheated temperature even after reducing the heat and the food will then cook without sticking.
