How to Send Instant Messages

Instant messages can directly be sent from Gmail and Yahoo mail. Sending messages from Gmail and Yahoo mail does not require you to install any software on your computer. Alternatively, you can use Google Talk or the Yahoo Messenger software, which provides similar functionality.

Things You'll Need

  • Gmail or Yahoo account
  • Google Talk or Yahoo Messenger

Send Instant Messages from Gmail

  • Log in to your Gmail account.

  • In the Gmail page that opens, on the left side, below "Chat," a list of contacts is displayed. A green dot shown before the contact name means that the person is currently online. Double-click on the name of a contact to whom you want to send an instant message.

  • In the pop-up box that opens, type your message and then press "Enter." Your message has been sent.

Send Instant Messages from Google Talk

  • Download and install Google Talk (See References section for link).

  • Open Google Talk and sign in.

  • From the displayed list of contacts, click on the name of the contact to whom you want to send an instant message.

  • In the pop-up box that opens, type your message and then press "Enter." Your message has been sent.

Send Instant Messages from Yahoo Mail

  • Log in in to your Yahoo mail account.

  • In the Yahoo mail window that opens, click on the drop down arrow near the "New" button and then click on "Chat" (Instant Message).

  • In the "New Chat" dialog box that opens, in the "To" field, type the Yahoo ID of the person to whom you want to send an instant message, and then press "Enter."

Send Instant Messages from Yahoo Messenger

  • Download and install Yahoo Messenger (See Resources for the link).

  • Open Yahoo Messenger and sign in.

  • From the displayed list of contacts, double-click on the name of a contact to whom you want to send an instant message.

  • In the pop-up box that opens, type your message and then press "Enter."
