How to Train a Sheltie Puppy to Fetch
After bringing a new sheltie puppy into your home, you can strengthen the bond between the two of you by incorporating fun, exciting training exercises into your daily routine. One of the easiest and most fun tricks you can teach your new sheltie is to fetch. 1
Place the leash on your puppy's collar. Hold the puppy's toy in front of his nose so he notices it, then toss it a few feet away (within leash length) from where you're standing. Speak the command "fetch" in a calm (not loud or aggressive) voice.

2
Let the leash slack so the puppy can run after the toy. When he has the toy in his mouth, gently pull the leash so the puppy comes back to you. When she is within an arm's reach, speak the command "give."

3
Take the toy from your puppy's mouth gently. If he holds onto it, do not play tug-of-war. When she releases the toy, give her a treat and praise her, using her name and petting/cuddling the puppy. Continue practicing and repeat the praising/treat process. If you are comfortable letting your dog off his leash, you can train him to come back to you without a leash using the fetch toy.

Tips & Warnings
Fetch training is best done in an area with little distraction--a quiet backyard compared to a dog park or a busy field.
