Creme brulee torches produce a long-lasting, high-intensity flame--but the source of all that heat requires regular refilling. If you've never refilled a handheld butane torch, figuring out the exact process can be less than intuitive. Getting it right is easy once you know the right steps. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the torch is turned off. If possible, lock the ignition button so it can't accidentally be triggered.

    • 2

Turn the torch upside down and locate the refill nozzle. The nozzle is metal and contains a tiny, cylindrical component. If your torch has a detachable stand, you may need to remove it in order to find the nozzle.

    • 3

Hold the can in a straight alignment with the torch and nozzle. Insert the tip of the aerosol butane into the nozzle and push. The pressure automatically starts the flow of fuel into the torch.

    • 4

Remove the butane can from the torch when the torch's fuel compartment is full. You will know the torch is full when the fuel stops flowing into the torch and starts to overflow.

    • 5

Wait at least three minutes before firing the torch again. This ensures that all leaked butane has time to evaporate and won't be ignited when you turn on the flame.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't hold the torch and butane nozzle in alignment, you'll experience a high degree of leakage. There is some leakage no matter what, but the butane evaporates very quickly.
