Acrylic acid is formed from the compound formula CH2CHCO2H. It is used quite often to make plastics, paints, floor polish, coatings and adhesives. This colorless formula usually does not cause too much damage to a human if she ingests a small amount of it; however, exposure to the compound for an extended period of time can cause heart failure. When splashed in the eyes, acrylic acid can cause permanent damage and/or blindness.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hold your head under running water for at least 20 minutes with the affected eye open. If you are wearing contacts, do not attempt to remove them. Standing in a shower is also effective to help remove the acrylic acid.

  2. Step 2

Rinse the unaffected eye for about five minutes, as washing the affected eye can cause the acrylic to leak into the opposite eye.

  3. Step 3

Call Poison Control at (800) 222-1222 and ask for advice about your particular case of acrylic acid in the eye(s).

  4. Step 4

Go to your local emergency room if advised. You will be treated for your injuries, and your doctor will make all attempts to save your vision and your eyes from permanent damage.
