How to Install Dragon NaturallySpeaking With Windows 7 or Vista 64-bit

Nuance, the company that makes Dragon NaturallySpeaking, reports that your words can appear on-screen three times faster than typing if you use their speech recognition program. Use the Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech recognition program to compose email, dictate documents and even launch Windows applications. Dragon NaturallySpeaking is a powerful program with many customizable features that you can configure when you install it on Windows 7 or 64-bit Vista.

Prepare to Install

  • Ensure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements needed to run Dragon NaturallySpeaking. The application supports 32-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows Vista. If you use Windows Vista, it must have SP2 installed. Your computer also needs the following hardware and software to meet the minimum system requirements:

A 1 GHz Intel Pentium or equivalent AMD processor or a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom processor. All processors need to use the SSE2 instruction set.

    A 512KB L2 processor cache.

3.2GB of free hard drive space. If you choose a localized non-English version of the product, you will need 4GB of free hard drive space.

2GB of RAM if you use Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Internet Explorer 7 or a higher version of that browser for online help.

Firefox 12 or higher, Internet Explorer 9 or Google Chrome 16 or higher if you want to use enhanced voice recognition capabilities in Hotmail and Gmail.

A sound card that supports 16-bit recording.

    A DVD-ROM drive.

An Internet connection to activate the program.

These are the minimum system requirements. Nuance recommends using a 2MB L2 processor cache and a 2.2 GHz Intel dual core or equivalent AMD processor. The company also recommends using 4GB of RAM for Windows 7 and Vista. Finally, Nuance recommends using a noise-canceling headset microphone. Dragon NaturallySpeaking comes with one of those headsets.

  • Connect your headset microphone to your computer.

  • Close all running computer applications and turn off your anti-virus software.

  • Insert your Dragon NaturallySpeaking installation DVD into your computer's DVD drive and wait for the installation wizard to start. You can perform two types of installations: Typical/Complete and Custom. The Typical/Complete installation installs all of the program's options and speech profiles. The Custom installation allows you to choose the options you'd like to install.

Perform Typical Installation

  • Follow the instructions that appear as the installation wizard guides you through the installation steps. Eventually it will display the Setup Type screen.

  • Click Setup Type screen's "Typical/Complete" radio button to select it.

  • Click the screen's "Change" button if you’d like to change the folder location where Windows stores the application's files. A window opens and displays your hard drive's folders. Double-click the folder where you'd like to store the application and click "Next" to proceed.

  • Click "Install."

Perform Custom Installation

  • Follow the instructions that appear on-screen as the installation wizard helps you set up Dragon NaturallySpeaking. The wizard will soon display the Setup Type screen.

  • Click the "Custom" radio button that appears on that screen to view a tree that contains features you can include in the installation. A down-arrow appears next to each feature.

  • Click the down-arrow next to a feature you'd like to install to view the following options: "Install now, with all subfeatures on local hard drive" or "Install when it is needed on a just-in-time basis."

  • Click the option you'd like to use and click "Next." If you don't have the Professional version of the program, click "Next" again. Otherwise, move to the Additional Options section and place check marks next to additional setup options you'd like to use. These options allow you to perform such tasks as change the program settings for all users and modify administrative settings.

  • Click "Next" and then click "Install" to begin installation. If you checked any of the boxes described in the previous section, additional dialog windows will open that allow you to modify additional program settings. Follow the instructions in those dialog windows.

Tips & Warnings

  • Nuance recommends choosing the "Typical/Complete" option unless you are an experienced user who understands the application.
  • The installation wizard may not start automatically when you insert your DVD into your computer. If it doesn't, launch Windows Explorer and find your DVD drive icon. Double-click that icon to display its files and double-click "setup.exe" to launch the installation wizard.
  • You can install the application on multiple computers, but you may not use it concurrently on more than one computer.
  • You must have Administrator rights on your PC to install Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
  • If you perform a Custom installation and do not include some features, you can add them later by running the setup program again and selecting "Modify."
  • These steps assume you already have version 10 installed on your system. If you have an older version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking and have not yet upgraded to Windows 7, uninstall it first before upgrading.
