Becoming a notary public in the state of New York can be a source of supplemental income. The main duties of a notary public are to attest to signatures and to administer certain oaths. Notary publics, who also can take affidavits and depositions, serve as a layer of security and help to minimize fraud.

      Ensure that you meet the qualifications to become a notary public in New York. You must be a resident of the state or have a place of business or office in New York. You must be at least the age of 18 and have the equivalent of a common school education at a minimum. You must also have a clean record and be in good moral standing to qualify.

      Apply to become a notary republic. You need to complete the New York State Notary Public application and pay a $60 fee to the New York Secretary of State Office, as of August 2011. You must then pass an examination and have your official pass printout submitted. You need to take the oath in front of another New York state notary public.

      Get the required supplies to work in the profession. The New York state notary public supplies include a stamp with your license number on it, a notary fee list, invoices and notary prep sheets.

      Renew your license every four years to continue working in the profession.
