Prevent A Blood Clot

Americans are becoming fatter. Surely not news to you. But did you know that our escalating weight puts us at an increased risk for a blood clot? And blood clots can kill.

Blood clots are formed in the arms or legs. They can break off and travel to the lungs. When they are in the lungs, they are called a pulmonary embolism.

And a pulmonary embolism is a true emergency that requires immediate hospitalization. Pulmonary embolisms can kill.

A friend of mine died from a pulmonary embolism, so do all you can to prevent a blood clot. And stay alive.

Instructions

    • 1

Step one - lose weight. Excess weight can cause decreased circulation in your legs and increase your risk for a blood clot.

    • 2

Step two - exercise daily. Walking is best. This increases circulation to your legs and decreases your weight.

    • 3

Step three - stop smoking. Especially if you are over the age of 35. Another factor that increases your blot clot risk.

    • 4

Step four - look over your wardrobe. Try everything on. If it is tight, donate it to the local thrift store or have a yard sale. They key here is to never wear tight pants, shoes, or socks. All increase your risk of blood clot.

    • 5

Step five - talk to your siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, ask if they have ever had a blood clot. Family history plays a large part in blood clot risk.

    • 6

Step six - when you are seated, put your feet both flat on the floor. Do not cross your legs, it cuts down on circulation and increases your blood clot risk.

    • 7

Step seven - take your prescription medication as ordered by the doctor. Especially medications such as Coumadin, aspirin, and Plavix. And if you are taking these medications - do all follow-up labs as directed by the doctor. It is very important you take just the right amount of these medications - not too much nor too little.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember, blood clots can kill. So follow these easy steps and stay alive.
