Not all fruit smoothies are created equal. No matter how many strawberries you throw into a blender, if you are also adding whole milk, white sugar and ice cream, you are not making the truly healthy strawberry smoothie that will jump start your day. Instead, use more nutritious ingredients along with the strawberries such as tofu, agave nectar and plain almond milk, which contains about 60 calories per serving. For a strawberry-almond smoothie, for example, you can make the smoothies as basic or complex as you would like depending on the flavor profile you are looking for. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 2 cups frozen strawberries
  • 2 tbsp. almond butter
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 tbsp. raw almonds
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 1/2 tsp. agave nectar
  • Dash of cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Simple Strawberry-Almond Smoothie

      Cut 1 cup of frozen strawberries in half and add to a blender.

      Add 2 tbsp. of almond butter and 1 cup of cold unsweetened almond milk.

      Cover the blender with a lid and blend until the ingredients are well-combined and smooth.

    Complex Strawberry-Almond Smoothie

      Soak two tbsp. of raw almonds in a bowl of water overnight.

      Drain the water from the almonds and place in the blender with 1 cup of coconut water. Blend until the mixture becomes a smooth almond milk.

      Pour the almond milk through a sieve over a bowl to remove any chunks of almonds. Rinse out the blender.

      Add 1 cup of sliced frozen strawberries, 1/2 cup silken tofu, 2 coarsely chopped dried figs, 1/2 tsp. honey or agave nectar, the strained almond milk and a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg into the blender.

      Cover the blender with the lid and blend until the ingredients are well combined into a smoothie. Pour the smoothie into a tall glass to serve.

Tips & Warnings

  • Feel free to experiment with the ingredients you add to the the smoothie as long as strawberries and almonds or almond milk are a main part of the recipe.
