If you enjoy fishing and want to make catfish bait and catch big catfish then the following article will show you how to do that.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

The key to catch big catfish starts with using bigger catfish bait. You will first need to do some fishing for some of those smaller type bream first. If the bream will fit in the palm of your hand, from the base of your palm to the bottom base of your fingers then that is a perfect size.

  2. Step 2

Using crickets with a float works well for catching these little bream. Try to catch as many as you can in case you have problems with the catfish or turtles stealing your bait. Keep the bream that you catch in a cooler or a live well with some of the pond or lake water in it.

  3. Step 3

When you have caught several of the smaller bream then you can shift gears and go after the big catfish. You will need to use a fairly good sized hook for this and you also need to clip a weight or two on your fishing line about a foot or so from your hook. The weight will lay on the bottom and allow your bait fish to float just a little.

  4. Step 4

It is your preference as to whether you use a float or not. If you don't use a float then you can prop your fishing pole up and watch it for any movement. You want your bait fish to bleed and not be moving so do whatever you like to accomplish that. Make sure you hook your bait fish good so you don't lose it on cast or get it stolen by the catfish.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you prop up your fishing pole and watch for any movement on it you might want to secure it somehow because a big catfish can jerk it and be gone with pole and all.
  • Use good sturdy line and set the drag on your reel to allow the cat to pull your line and then reel back the slack so you can wear him down and land it.
  • If you don't set the drag on your real properly you risk snapping your line under pressure.
  • Secure your pole or risk losing it to a big catfish that can snatch it right into the water.
  • Your chances are pretty good for catching a turtle this way and if so be careful of those snapping turtles because they will bite you and it does hurt.
