Your dachshund can be in an agility trial.

Any dog may take part in agility trials, even if he isn’t a purebred or registered with one of the national kennel associations. While a dachshund is limited by his short legs, he may still compete in agility trials with his owner. If you’re interested in sharing in this fun hobby with your dachshund, you have some groundwork to do before you enter a show. Local kennel clubs offer practice sessions for dog owners to attend with their pooches. During practice and during a real agility trial, you will compete right alongside your dachshund.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You'll Need:

  • Access to Agility Equipment Tasty Dog Treats
  1. Step 1

Start your dachshund with the basic “dog walk.” This entails taking him up a ramp to an elevated walking plank and down the other side. Sections on both ramps may be a different color and your dog must make contact with his feet on these areas. If he jumps off too soon, he may lose points.

  2. Step 2

Keep your dachshund on a leash when he’s learning the seesaw. The trick is to hurry until he nears the middle of the seesaw before slowing down to allow it to tip gently. Then he may run down the opposite side.

  3. Step 3

Teach your pooch to lay down quickly on the Pause Table. This table adjusts for different breeds and your dachshund must jump up and immediately lay down at your command. Practice the “down” on the ground frequently to make sure he will perform it on queue.

  4. Step 4

Practice getting your dachshund through the soft tunnel by positioning it straight at first and having an assistant help by holding your dog at one end while you kneel down and call him through with a treat. After he goes into the tunnel with ease, bend it into a curve so he can’t see the opening.

  5. Step 5

Weave with your dachshund on a leash to teach him how to go through the poles with ease. Some dachshunds pick this up easily and will soon dart quickly between the poles.

  6. Step 6

Lower the single bar to its lowest setting for your dachshund. Do not attempt to put it any higher. Your dog has a long spine that may be injured by jumping and landing from a distance.

  7. Step 7

Walk through the agility course with your dachshund more than once to familiarize both of you before an agility trial. Every course is slightly different and your dog must follow a predetermined pattern in order to receive the most points.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make it fun. If your dachshund tires, call it a day and practice another time. As long as he enjoys it – he will continue to learn. If you yell at him, you risk ruining the activity for him.
