How to Attach Small Plates on the Wall

Small decorative plates can be used to add color and design to a wall or as a substitute for a wallpaper border along the ceiling line. Some restaurants or other commercial enterprises use plates in this way for decoration, but they often streamline the process by drilling a small hole in each plate and then screwing the plate to the wall. While this can be speedy and sturdy, it is not something you want to do with Grandma's keepsake china or other antique dishware. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the plates you intend to hang on the wall. Plate hangers are available for individual plates, or as a rack. The size of the plates will determine which plate hangers to purchase.

    • 2

Purchase the appropriate sized plate hangers for the plates being hung. If you choose the metal spring-type plate hanger, the four hooks clip around the edge of the plate to hold it in place. If you intend to use a plate rack, make sure it is long enough to accommodate all plates you want to display.

    • 3

To hang plates individually, hold each plate, contained in its plate hanger, along the wall where you intend to attach it. You will be hammering a small nail and picture hook into the wall, but first you need to mark where it should go. Use a pencil to make a small dot on the wall, marking where the plate hanger will hang on the hook.

    • 4

Put the plate aside, and hammer in a tiny nail and picture hook. Choose the nail and hook size to match proportionally with the plate hanger. Hang the plate, in its plate holder, on the hook.

    • 5

If you intend to use a plate rack for displaying the plates on the wall, hang the plate rack by drilling it into the wall studs. Use a level to ensure the rack is even and plates will not slide off.

Tips & Warnings

  • To help arrange the plates, make paper templates of each plate and attach templates to the wall using tape. You can easily rearrange the templates until you arrive at the desired pattern.

  • Adhesive plate hangers are also available. They bond to the back of the plate and can be removed by soaking in warm water.

  • Do not try to fit a plate into a hanger that is the wrong size for the plate, as this can cause the plate to slip out or break from stress.

  • Only use metal spring-type hangers with high fired porcelain or stoneware ceramics.
