The Amazon sword plant is favored by aquarium hobbyists and aquatic gardeners alike. Its broad, sword-shaped leaves add a lush appearance to any aqua-scape. They are quite simple to grow and easy to maintain. Under the right conditions, these plants not only add an aesthetic edge to your scenery, but also add much needed oxygen to the water.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Amazon sword plant
  • Aquarium with tank light
  • Substrate
  • Vermiculite
  • Aquatic plant fertilizer
  1. Step 1

Clean the aquarium and fill it with at least an inch of vermiculite. Add 1 inch of substrate. This can be regular aquarium gravel or clay-based gravel, preferably no larger than the size of a pinhead. Don't forget to place your aquarium in the location you want it to remain before you begin filling it.

  2. Step 2

Dig a depression just deep enough for the roots to touch the vermiculite. Place the plant in the hold. While holding the plant in place, cover the tops of the roots with the substrate.

  3. Step 3

Fill the aquarium with water. Begin this process very slowly--otherwise you could stir up all your substrate and dislodge your plant, making a big mess. One cup at a time, gently introduce the water into the tank. As the water deepens, you can pour larger amounts of water, but pour slowly to avoid disturbing the substrate. Fill the tank until the water level is 1 inch below the top of the tank.

  4. Step 4

Place the lid on top of the tank and turn on the tank light. Leave it on for 12 hours at a time. Amazon sword plants that receive 12 hours of light per day perform best and stay healthy.

  5. Step 5

Maintain your sword plant. Remove any damaged leaves and supply a good quality aquatic plant fertilizer. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to avoid harming the plant or any other tank inhabitants.
