Tecumseh small engines are found on many brands of power equipment including Ariens, Craftsman, Cub Cadet, Yard Machines, Toro, Husqvarna, and many others. Small engines require regular maintenance attention just like their larger vehicle counterparts do. The oil must be checked and changed regularly. The spark plugs need to be cleaned and replaced regularly. The air filter also requires regular attention. These tasks do not require a high level of mechanical understanding. They are very easy to complete, and can be accomplished in 30 to 60 minutes.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Spark plug tool
  • Cloth rag or paper towe
  • Spark plug
  • Gapping tool
  • New air filter
  • Air compressor
  • SAE 30 engine oil
  • Used oil storage container
  1. Step 1

Disconnect the spark plug wire from the exposed spark plug electrode and move it away from the spark plug to disallow accidental engine starting.

  2. Step 2

Remove the spark plug with a spark plug tool. Wipe any black carbon deposits off of the internal spark electrode with a cloth rag or a paper towel. Inspect the condition of the spark plug checking for signs of damage or premature wear. If there are any signs of damage or premature wear, replace the spark plug with a new plug. If the spark plug is two years old or more, replace the plug. Check the internal electrode gap space and adjust it to 0.030 inches (0.76 mm) with the help of a gapping tool. Place the new spark plug into the spark plug tool and insert it into the spark plug hole. Tighten the plug. Do not reconnect the spark plug wire yet.

  3. Step 3

Open the air filter cover and remove the air filter. Inspect the air filter. If it is clean and in good condition, blow any debris and dirt that may be present with an air compressor and replace the air filter. If the air filter is two years old or more, replace the air filter with a new filter. Close and secure the air filter cover.

  4. Step 4

Check the engine oil level before each use. When the oil level is low, add SAE 30 engine oil to the oil reservoir. Double check that the oil level is not too high as this will produce engine performance issues. Change the oil once annually, or after 100 hours of operating time. Start the engine and allow it to warm up for three to four minutes. Turn the engine off and allow it to sit for a few minutes so the oil will settle back into the oil pan. Open the oil fill hole, tip the engine to the side and pour the used oil into a used oil storage container. Level the engine and replace the used oil with fresh SAE 30 engine oil. Wipe any oil spillage away with a cloth rag or a paper towel.
