How to Photograph Wildflowers
Photographs of wildflowers are beautiful, they're the next best thing to actual wildflowers. The best time of year to capture wildflower pictures is in spring, when the flowers first bloom. If you can't wait until spring, they can be found year-round, depending on the climate and where you live. Photographing wildflowers is also a great reason to get out of your house and explore nature.

Know where and when to look. The best places are in the wild, grassy fields, the alpine tundra, even in the desert. They typically bloom in spring, and continue blooming until the weather gets cold and freezes. The same flowers don't exist all season long, the plants gradually grow more flowers to replace the old ones that die. Some plants will flower at different parts of the year than others.

Take your camera, and hit the road. You'll need to walk, bike, or drive to the nearest place you can think of to find a wildflower. Maybe you even have wildflowers in your backyard. If that's the case, you're in luck and you can start shooting immediately.

Know the two methods to shooting wild flowers. The first method is the portrait. Like a portrait of a person, this photograph centers on the actual flower. The second method is the landscape photograph. A landscape is when you photograph a whole bunch of wildflowers in their landscape. It helps if there are rolling hills and grass, or perhaps a object like a barn or a tree to complete the photo.

Take into account the light being produced in your environment, as light has a huge impact on how your photograph will turn out. The best light for shooting flowers is in the early mornings, when the sun is just coming up, and in the late afternoons when the sun is lower in the sky. This produces longer shadows and better illumination for your photographs.

Consider equipment. Cameras will take different pictures depending on the type and the lens you're using. Macro lenses are especially good for detail shots of flowers. Wide-angle lenses are excellent for landscape shots.
