How to Disable Control Key in MS Word

Most people will never utilize Microsoft Word for anything more than basic word processing purposes, but there are actually quite a few preferences and workflow settings that can be altered to make your life easier. One of the things Word can do is disable those keyboard shortcuts that just seem to be struck by accident all the time, creating endless headaches and the need to undo things you may not even know you've done.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Microsoft Word on your computer.

    • 2

Select the "Tools" dropdown menu and select "Customize Keyboard."

    • 3

Select "All Commands" in the "Categories" list in the keyboard customization dialogue box and look at the "Commands" list.

    • 4

Identify each command that includes the Control key by viewing the keyboard shortcut in the "Current Keys" field and click the "Remove" button for each. This is something of a slow process, but while the Control key is involved in so many functions in Word, there is no single thing it does on its own. Each function including it must be removed separately.

    • 5

Select "Normal.dot" from the "Save Changes In" dropdown menu to apply your changes to every document, or select another object in the dropdown to apply the changes only for that type of document.

Tips & Warnings

  • Rather than disabling every function that involves the Control key, it may be more useful to to disable the shortcuts that involve the key that you hit most often by accident.
