  • Glossy abelia cuttings
  • Scissors or pruning shears
  • Potting soil
  • Container
  • Water

    Propagating Glossy Abelia

  1. Step 1

Obtain glossy abelia cuttings. Cuttings should be taken from the newly grown softwood of the abelia, and should be a minimum of 6 inches in length. The cuttings are soft enough to be harvested with scissors, but pruning shears work just as well.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the cuttings. Strip away any leaves from the bottom 2 inches of the cutting, and do not allow the cut tip of the cutting to dry out. If the cut tip dries, trim it by 1/4 inch into the moist wood.

  3. Step 3

Prepare the rooting containers. Containers can be anything from pots to disposable cups. Fill them with nutrient rich potting soil, and moisten it. Allow the soil a few moments to drain well.

  4. Step 4

Plant the cuttings. Insert the cuttings into the moist potting soil and place the cuttings in a sunny location. Keep the pots warm and the climate humid. This can be done by placing plastic wrap or a clear cover over the container if necessary.

  5. Step 5

Monitor the cuttings. Water the cuttings as the soil begins to show signs of dryness. These cuttings need plenty of moisture to root. Rooting takes place within 4-6 weeks, at which time they can be transplanted.
