How to Count in Blackjack

If you want to play blackjack, you need to learn how to count your cards correctly. Blackjack is a game played against a dealer, and the winner needs to count his cards and the dealer's cards and determine the necessary steps to take to reach the desired score of 21. In order to do this, you need to be able to count your points and determine the value of your cards.

Instructions

    • 1

Count number cards. In blackjack, all numbered cards from two to 10 are worth their face value; so, a two of hearts is worth two points, for example. Numbered cards in blackjack can help you reach 21, so you need to keep track of them and count them in your total (and the dealer's).

Count face cards. Face cards are all worth 10 points each in blackjack. Face cards include the jack, king, and queen.

    • 3

Count the ace. An ace can be worth one point or 11 points, depending on how you need them. For example, if you have a 10 and a queen and an ace, you would want your ace to count for one point to get you to 21. If, however, you only had a ten and an ace, you would want the ace to count for 11 points.

Count to win. The object of blackjack is to earn 21 points, which is called a blackjack hand. If you can't get to 21, then you want to get as close as possible without going over, and you want your hand to be worth more points than the dealer's hand. Keep track of how many points you have in your hand before deciding if you want to stay with what you have or get another card or two to help you reach your goal.
