Instructions

  1. Steps for Texture Painting

    • 1

Select paint color and texture paint or texture additive paint for texture painting a kitchen. Also, select texture paint pattern. Patterns to consider: heavy ridge (made with a trowel), swirl, sandstone (sand included), or Venetian plaster, a marble look.

    • 2

Buy smallest quantity of texture paint or paint and texture additive. It is usually a quart of paint.

    • 3

Practice texture painting on a hardboard to hone your technique. With this piece, place it up against your wall to visualize the whole wall in texture paint and color selection for texture painting a kitchen.

    • 4

Measure room and calculate how much texture paint to buy. See Resources for a paint calculator.

    • 5

Prepare walls for texture paint. Use detergent to clean walls of dirt film or grease. Address any wall repairs needed such as holes or cracks and use spackling with knife to fill any holes. Countersink protruding nail heads. Make walls smooth by sanding. Let walls dry completely before painting.

    • 6

Remove anything from the room that you do not want to have texture paint dripped on or that will get in your way.

    • 7

Use blue painter's tape around edges of ceiling, cabinets, door facings or windows. Take off light fixture and electrical plates. Painter's tape is more expensive, but well worth it when it does not peel away your new paint. Place drop cloths on floors, islands, or any furniture you were unable to move.

    • 8

Use a 2-inch or 2 1/2-inch paintbrush, starting at one corner of the ceiling and cut in around the perimeter of your work area, or a square of 3 feet by 3 feet. Do this in sections of ceiling to floor all across your wall, allowing for areas with cabinets, windows and doors.

    • 9

Sandstone: Apply the base coat paint in 3-by-3 foot squares, keeping a wet edge that you overlap to start your next square. Use a looped roller to start a "W" on the wall and fill in and repeat the process until wall is completely covered. Allow it to dry four hours and paint a second coat, if desired.

Old World: Mix simple joint compound with water in a small bucket to dilute it. Diluted mixture should be easier to work with, but not too runny. To get mud on the wall, use a paint roller. Work area should be 3 feet by 3 feet with a wet edge. For texture painting, take trowel and pull it down on its side. Bring trowel up on opposite edge to create inconsistency effects. Texture painting should have interesting inconsistencies for an Old World look. Once you have achieved the look you want, let it dry overnight.

Apply base coat paint and let it dry overnight. Mix one part secondary paint with four parts of faux glaze. This coat will bring out inconsistencies in the base coat to achieve Old World look.

Tips & Warnings

  • Texture paint probably should not be applied with sprayer because of clogging the paint mechanism.

  • Texture painting hides imperfections in walls.

  • Use 5-gallon paint bucket with a roller grid for ease of roller painting.

  • Keep consistent amount of paint on roller and spread it without drips. A dryer

  • roller will give your wall more of a "bas relief" or three-dimensional effect.

  • Paint curing takes about one week.

  • If wall was originally painted with an oil-based paint, you will need to put an oil-based primer before changing to a latex-based paint. You cannot use latex-based paint over an oil-based paint. Unfavorable results are guaranteed to occur.
