Instructions

  1. Sponging on wall texture

    • 1

Select paint color and glaze paint bearing in mind that lighter colors will brighten a room and darker colors will darken a room.

    • 2

Go to local home supply store and buy a quart of base coat, secondary paint color and glaze.

    • 3

Practice and perfect your technique, just as you will be applying it. With your practice board, hold it up against your wall to visualize color in your room.

    • 4

Gather room measurements to figure out how much paint to buy. Use the included paint calculator (see Resource 1).

    • 5

Prepare walls for sponging on wall texture paint. Clean walls of any dirt film or grease. Make necessary wall repairs for cracks, holes, or protruding nails. Countersink nails, patch holes with spackling, and then sand. Walls need to dry before sponging on wall texture.

    • 6

Remove light switch and electrical plates. Use blue painter's tape around baseboards, windows, door facings, and crown mouldings.

    • 7

Lay down drop cloths and remove items from room in preparation for sponging on wall texture paint.

    • 8

Paint base coat first with a 2"-2 ½" paint brush beginning at a corner of the ceiling and cut-in around the perimeter of your work area. Cut-in around the baseboard as well. Roll paint on in the shape of a "W." Fill in and around the "W," going in all directions for complete coverage. Work in a square of three feet by three feet. Paint in sections of ceiling to floor all across your wall, keeping a wet edge so there is no line of demarcation. Allow paint to dry completely.

    • 9

Mix secondary paint color, one part to four parts glaze. If you want more color in sponging on wall texture, then use a less amount of glaze. Experimenting on your hardboard will determine what combination of paint and glaze to use for sponging on wall texture.

    • 10

Use a natural sea sponge for sponging on wall texture paint with random patterns, working a three feet by three feet area. Again, start near the ceiling in a corner and work around a perimeter and baseboard, keeping a wet edge. This gives a professional look.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cover corners well for a professional look.

  • Blue painter's tape is money well spent as it lifts off easily--not your paint.
