How to Make Homemade Plastic Worms
One advantage of using plastic worms is you can reuse the same bait many times without having to visit your local bait shop or hunt for nightcrawlers. These wiggly fishing lures can be created at home with the use of a few specialty products. Worm molds, liquid plastic, plastic coloring and worm oil can be purchased at some bait shops or ordered from the Internet websites of lure making companies such as Lurecraft or M-F Manufacturing.
Things You'll Need

- Candy thermometer
- Plastic color
- Worm mold

Instructions

1
Heat 1 oz. of liquid plastic in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring frequently. The plastic will become clear as it heats. Remove the pan from the burner when a candy thermometer reads 350 degrees F.
-
2
Stir plastic color into the hot plastic until the plastic has reached your desired shade.
-
-
3
Pour the colored plastic into a glass measuring cup with a pour spout. This will allow you to easily fill the worm molds without spilling any plastic.
-
4
Pour the plastic into a worm mold to fill the molds to the brim. You should have enough plastic to make approximately six worms.
-
5
Allow the worms to cool for three minutes. Remove the worms from the molds and place them in cool water until they have cooled completely. Let the worms dry before you store them in plastic bags.
-
6
Apply a few drops of worm oil to the plastic worms to prevent them from sticking together in the bag and to keep them from drying out.

Tips & Warnings
Work quickly when the plastic is hot as it will cool quickly and become too thick to pour.
Glitter can be added to the melted plastic when the color is added.
Add fluorescent plastic colors to the plastic before it is heated for best results.
