How to Cut a Marble Countertop With a Wet Saw

Cutting a marble countertop with a wet saw is possible but requires a bit of preparation to make sure that the countertop will not crack. Wet saws have a gliding table that is used to move a tile toward the blade. Most wet saws will not, however, have a table large enough to accommodate a countertop. In order to rectify this, you will either need one or two people to hold the countertop's ends to neutralize the weight or construct something to support the countertop. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Cutting the Countertop

    • 1

Set the wet saw up on a sturdy surface.

    • 2

Fill the pan with water high enough to cover the water pump.

    • 3

Mark on the edge of the marble with a pencil where the cut needs to be made.

    • 4

Place the countertop on the gliding table.

    • 5

With the wet saw off, slide the counter top toward the blade to check that the blade will impact where the cut needs to be made.

    • 6

Pull the countertop away from the blade.

    • 7

Turn the wet saw on and, if the wet saw has a separate switch for the water pump, turn on the water pump as well. Allow time for the water pump to engage and begin pouring water over the blade.

    • 8

With the edge of the countertop sufficiently supported, glide the countertop towards the blade slowly.

    • 9

Push the counter top slowly through the saw at a rate of about one inch every five seconds. Monitor the edge for cracking or chipping. If this occurs, stop cutting and allow the blade to cool under the water.

    • 10

When the countertop is completely cut, turn the saw off before removing the piece from the saw.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear eye protection as a wet saw can cause small pieces of stone to violently detach from the piece.

  • If your wet saw will not accommodate the countertop have the piece cut by a professional stone fabricator.

  • Do not attempt to cut granite with a wet saw that is more than 1/2 inch thick. Marble and granite are two different types of stone. Check with your supplier if you are unsure whether your countertop is marble or granite.
