Step 1
Look at your patio door. The type of door you have will determine what kind of curtain rod you can use. For example, a metal door will require a magnetic curtain rod while a wood door will allow you to screw in curtain rod holders. If your patio door has an indented glass pane, you can probably use a spring-loaded tension rod to cover the window. A sliding patio door will require over-the-door hardware.

Determine where you want your curtains. You will get a different look if you hang your curtain rod over the patio doors than you would if you cover only the glass of the door, so determine how big a presence in the room you want your patio door to have.

Purchase your hardware. For a big, dramatic look you'll need ornate hardware that hangs on the wall over the patio door. This will give it a more "windowy" look. For a kitchen patio door or a casual look, use smaller, less intrusive hardware that may attach directly to the door.

Select your curtains. For a dramatic look select heavy velvet or faux velvet drapes in a dark burgundy or other deep color. Use curtain tieback holders on the sides of the patio door to complete the look. For a more casual look use a colorful sheer to coordinate with your other décor.

Put it together. Hang your hardware, or measure and install your magnetic or tension rods on or around your patio door following the manufacturer's instructions. Push your curtains onto your rods and hang.
