How to Soak a Wound
Physicians will often recommend soaking a wound as part of the treatment of an injured patient. Soaking promotes healing by cleansing it and keeping the wound moist. There are several different options for soaking methods. The option chosen depends on the type of wound.
Things You'll Need
- Gauze pads
- Rolled gauze
- Bandage tape
- Tub or bowl
- Salt
- Warm water
- Dry towel

Fill a tub or bowl with warm water. Be sure the container is large enough to fit the full wound.

Add 2 teaspoons of salt per quart of water and stir well.

Soak the wound for 20 minutes. Be sure that the wound is fully immersed. The wound should be soaked for 20 minutes, three times a day.

Dry the wound with the towel. Cover the wound with clean bandage as directed by your physician.

Watch for signs of infection such as red streaks, warmth in the area of the wound, swollen lymph nodes, increased tenderness and fever. If these symptoms appear contact your physician.

Tips & Warnings
If the wound is closed, or has sutures, use a clean cloth soaked with warm water. Place the soaked cloth on the wound for 20 minutes, three times a day.
