GFCI, also known as Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt, receptacles are used for installations in places that are potentially wet such as kitchens, and bathrooms or outdoor spaces. These receptacles work on much the same principle as their breaker counterparts. Testing the reliability of a GFCI receptacle is a task which should be completed once a month. Plug an appliance into the GFCI receptacle in question.

Turn the appliance on.

Locate the "Test" button on the GFCI receptacle

Press the "Test" button. The appliance should turn off immediately. If it does not, then there could be a wiring short or a faulty receptacle.

Press the "Reset" button beneath to "Test" button. This will restore electricity to the receptacle and allow for normal usage again.
