GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. GFCI-protected outlets have been required in American homes since the 1970s. A GFCI-protected outlet compares the electrical current coming from the main panel with the electrical current returning to the panel. Any difference means the current must be taking a different route (such as through a person) to return to ground. When the GFCI detects a difference in current, it opens the circuit within 1/25 to 1/30 of a second, cutting off the power supply to the outlet.
