How to Load Dishwasher Racks

Loading a dishwasher properly is essential to ensure your dishes get as clean as possible and that there is no breakage. Dishwasher racks are designed to hold dishes, cups, pots and pans a certain way. Following proper loading steps will get much better results, waste less water and seriously reduce your need to rewash dishes after a dishwasher cycle. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove large particles of food from the pots, pans and plates. Smaller particles are OK, but any bite-sized pieces or bigger need to be removed from the dishes first. Anything that is already stuck to the plate may pose a problem as well, and should be removed before putting in the dishwasher.

    • 2

Place plastic items, cups, mugs and glasses on the top rack, turned upside down so that the mouth of the item is touching the rack. This gives the water a better chance of reaching the dirty areas, and also lets water drain properly.

    • 3

Place plates in the slots of the lower rack, as close to the center as possible. Turn the plates inward so that the side you eat on faces the center of the dishwasher. This is so the water spray, which comes from the center of the dishwasher, hits the dirtiest part of the plates first.

    • 4

Place pots and pans on the bottom rack behind the dishes. Turn the pots and pans upside down or inwards towards the center, again to make it easier for the water spray to hit the dirtiest areas.

    • 5

Place utensils in the utensil holder. Larger utensils may need to be laid flat in the upper rack if they do not fit down below.

Tips & Warnings

  • The top rack is built specifically for cups, mugs and glasses, but placing these items on the top rack also lets the dishes with the most food items such as plates go on the bottom rack closer to the water spray. And it protects these more delicate items from the heat that is more intense down below.

  • Don't overload the dishwasher. Putting too many dishes in the dishwasher will hinder cleaning since the water spray will have a harder time reaching the dishes that may be obstructed.

  • Do not place breakables too close together. The vibrations of the dishwasher may cause them to hit each other and break.
