The process of urinary catheterisation is mainly used for kids when there a blockage in the urinary tract that needs to be removed. In such a situation, a short, plastic tube namely urinary catheter is induced into the patient's bladder region through the urethra. The tube induced into the tract serves as an artificial passage through which urine can then be passed out in an unobstructed and comfortable manner. Urinary catheters can also be introduced into the body through the belly button. Urinary catheter introduced through the path of belly is known as suprapubic catheter. When used for male child, the urinary catheter tube can be inserted through penis. For elderly males, the urinary catheter tube is placed over the penis instead of being placed into the penis.
