How to Divide a White Bird of Paradise in the Ground

Bird of paradise makes a beautiful addition to any flower garden. The plant gets its name from its beautiful flower, which resembles a brightly colored bird in flight. White bird of paradise, also called tree bird of paradise, has a distinct stem.

If you have a white bird of paradise, you can propagate it by dividing it. While plants grown from seed will bloom in 3 to 5 years, division will produce a flowering plant in 1 to 2 years.

Things You'll Need

• Gardening spade or shovel
• Sharp knife

Instructions

1. Carefully dig around the plant to unearth the underground stems or rhizomes.

2. Cut the rhizomes with the sharp knife. Each division should have a fan with roots attached.

3. Replant each division in a small pot and place in indirect sunlight.

4. Water frequently for up to 8 weeks.

5. Transplant the new plants back into your flower garden.
