Instructions

    • 1

Gather the fruit of the maypop, also known as wild apricot, in early autumn. The fruit is small and oval shaped, similar to a robin's egg. The brilliant green fruit turns a creamy yellow when ripe and ready for harvest.

    • 2

Cut the ripened fruit in half with a sharp paring knife.

    • 3

Scoop out the seeds. Undeveloped or immature seeds will be small and white; mature and ripened seed will be larger and dark brown or black.

    • 4

Rinse the seeds to remove the sweet and sticky fruit residue.

    • 5

Sort out the mature seeds to be used for new plant propagation.

    • 6

Lay the seeds on a dry paper towel and allow to dry.

    • 7

Store the dry seeds in a paper bag and put the bag in a dark, dry place until you are ready to plant them in the garden.

Tips & Warnings

  • Maypop is used to treat nervous disorders, including anxiety, restlessness and insomnia. Non-toxic and non-habit forming, the herb is safe with no known side affects. The herb is prepared as a tea or tincture.

  • Maypop is an exceptionally heavy vine. If you wish it to climb, make sure it has a strong, supported trellis. Maypop may also be allowed to grow on the ground where it will attach its self to fences and porch rails.

  • The exterior of the seed is very tough. Prior to planting, sand lightly with a coarse sandpaper, then soak the seeds in lukewarm water.
