How to Do a Church Welcome Address

A successful church welcome address brings focus and clarity to the audience and sets the tone for forthcoming events. Whether it is a Sunday morning service, baptism, wedding, funeral or other special event, the welcome address should not be overlooked or taken lightly. Take the time to find an original and personal way to welcome the audience. Leave room for the Holy Spirit to enter as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a copy of the order of service ahead of time and read through all of it. Read the scripture selections that will be read. If your tradition has a book of worship or prayer book, look up prayers of preparation for the day or event.

    • 2

Rehearse your speech often and if possible, commit it to memory so that your body and voice match the words.

    • 3

Arrive a little early and allow yourself some quiet time for prayer before the event begins.
Sip water or a hot beverage to clear your throat before getting up to speak.

    • 4

Project your voice to the back of the room. Enunciate your words, speaking slowly and clearly.

    • 5

Be brief and sincere. Make eye contact around the room and smile as you speak. Let your body language and voice match the words.

    • 6

Welcome all groups in attendance and add a special welcome for new members and visitors.

    • 7

Frame the day as a moment for worship, pointing the event toward God.Include a brief verse of scripture that relates to the day's event or sermon.

    • 8

Allow for a smooth and seamless transition from your welcome address to the events that follow.
