Changing the look of a room could mean pulling up old carpet. This might sound like a project meant for a small work crew, but with a little planning the task will go quickly. Even with only one or two as a demolition crew, the job can be finished in a weekend. Removing old carpet and replacing it with hardwood or new carpet will increase the value of your home as well as lift your spirits.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Remove all the furniture from the room if possible. If you can't move it all out, remove as much as you can. Furniture that is left in the room can be pushed out of the way while the carpet is removed.

  2. Step 2

Remove the baseboards, being careful not to damage them if you plan to reuse them. Insert a flat tool, such as a pry bar, between the wall and the baseboard to dislodge it.

  3. Step 3

Put on a dust mask and work gloves to protect yourself from dirt and debris that may be embedded in the carpet.

  4. Step 4

Start in one corner of the room and pull 4 feet of carpet away from the wall. Use a utility knife to make a horizontal cut from one side to the other.

  5. Step 5

Roll up this 4-foot section of carpet, secure it with duct tape and remove it from the room.

  6. Step 6

Continue to cut the carpet in 4-foot widths, roll it up and remove it.

  7. Step 7

Carefully remove the tack strips along the walls. The claw of a hammer or a screwdriver can be used to lift the strips from the floor.

Tips & Warnings
  • Contact your disposal company before removing the rug. The company may have rules regarding weight or length of items.
