How to Grill Steak on a Gas Barbeque

A gas barbeque is a grill that uses natural gas, butane, or propane for fuel as opposed to charcoal. One of the greatest benefits of a gas barbeque is that, unlike charcoal, you do not have to wait a long period of time for a gas barbeque to heat up. Once you have selected the right steak, grilling it to perfection on a gas barbeque is a straightforward process. The ideal steak should be charred on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. Instructions

    • 1

Follow the instructions of the manufacturer to light the grill. Some gas barbecues have an igniter button that will light the flame automatically. If you must light your barbecue with a match, however, use a long match or simply toss the match into the grill near the fuel valve to avoid injury.

    • 2

Set the gas grill to "high". Steaks turn out best when grilled at high heat for short periods of time. This locks in the juices and the flavor.

    • 3

Allow the gas barbecue to preheat for twenty minutes.

    • 4

Place the steak on the grill. Use the lowest rack to ensure that the meat is as close to the heat source as possible. Close the lid.

    • 5

Turn the steak over after three minutes. If your steak is less than ¾ of an inch thick, you may wish to turn it sooner.

    • 6

Wait another three minutes and reduce the heat to medium high. Allow the steak to cook for approximately two minutes on each side, depending on the thickness of the meat.

    • 7

Test the steak by making a small incision in the thickest part of the meat with a knife. Examine the coloring of the meat.

    • 8

Place the steak back on the barbecue for an extra minute on both sides if your test reveals that the meat is not as thoroughly cooked as you prefer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Grilling is not solely for meat. You can wrap vegetables in aluminum foil and cook them on a gas barbecue as well.

  • Leave the grill on high for several minutes after cooking your meat to allow the bits of charred food that may be left to burn off the racks.

  • Never use a gas barbecue around an open flame

  • Keep all grilling utensils out of the reach of children.
