Aluminum thresholds are located at the bottom of an exterior door unit. Aluminum is used to create thresholds because the material is resistant to various weather conditions, such as rain and snow. Harsh conditions can be hard on thresholds over time, and replacement may be required. Save time and money by replacing the threshold yourself, rather than hiring a costly handyman.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Screw gun
  • Hammer or mallet
  • Reciprocating saw
  • Replacement threshold
  1. Step 1

Locate and inspect the threshold's screw fasteners; the fasteners will most likely be located in the center of the threshold.

  2. Step 2

Using a screw gun, remove the screw fasteners that run along the top of the threshold.

  3. Step 3

Using a reciprocating saw, cut any screw fasteners that may be located between the aluminum threshold and the door jambs. Most pre-hung door units feature screw fasteners located between the door jamb and threshold.

  4. Step 4

Slide the threshold out from under the door jambs; if needed, use a hammer or mallet to tap the threshold out from under the jambs.

  5. Step 5

Slide the new threshold under the door jambs. Place a wood block against the threshold and tap it with a hammer so that the threshold is centered under the door jambs.

  6. Step 6

Using a screw gun, screw the new fasteners in the threshold's pre-drilled holes.
