For some people, making a trip to the dentist's office can cause a deluge of stress and anxiety. Thankfully, there are a few easy ways to curb that feeling of panic. And it all starts with the proper dentist. Sedation dentistry is a type of dental care that involves using medication to ensure that the patient remains calm throughout the entire appointment. Some dentists will prescribe anti-anxiety medications, others will recommend anesthesia, and still others will suggest nitrous oxide. It all depends on the dentist and the severity of your uneasiness.

Making the Dentist's Chair Less Frightening

  1. Step 1

Call to make an appointment with a sedation dentist. While making the appointment, explain how anxious you get during dental exams and ask what they can do to help alleviate the stress.

  2. Step 2

Listen carefully as they explain what they can do to decrease your stress level. Once you have come to an agreement about how your anxiety will be handled, ask if there are any specific instructions regarding eating or drinking before the appointment.

  3. Step 3

If the dentist writes you a prescription for anti-anxiety medication, fill the prescription at your local pharmacy. Take the pills as directed by the pharmacist.

  4. Step 4

Mentally prepare for the visit by promising yourself a treat upon completion.

  5. Step 5

Arrive at the dentist's office on the day of your appointment.

  6. Step 6

Upon entering the exam room, put on your sunglasses to shield your eyes from the bright lights. Advise the dentist that you will be listening to music and ask that he or she tap you on the shoulder if there are questions.

  7. Step 7

Put in your headphones. Try to stay relaxed for the duration of the exam by listening to soothing music.

  8. Step 8

Once the exam is over, be sure to remember that treat you promised yourself. Just don't overdo it on the sweets!

Tips & Warnings
  • Tell the people who are close to you how proud of yourself you are and how great your teeth feel. Ask them to remind you of these sentiments the next time you complain about making an appointment to see the dentist.
  • If you are not completely honest with the dentist about your apprehension, there is no way for them to help you. You will continue to dread the dentist and put off making appointments. Your dental health will suffer as a result, eventually leading to a long series of painful and expensive procedures.
