How to Change the Passat Fuel Filter

The fuel filter in your Volkswagen Passat cleans dirt, grime, rust and dust out of the fuel that enters your engine, keeping the inside of your motor clean and running well. If a fuel filter is used for too long without replacement, these particles may get through, causing serious engine damage. Keep your Passat running its best by changing the fuel filter every 45,000 miles.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the fuel pump fuse box and remove the fuel pump fuse. This stops the fuel pump from sending fuel to the engine, so that we may clear the fuel line for fuel filter replacement.

    • 2

Remove the fuel intake tube from the pressure regulator to release built-up compression in the fuel line. Turn the car on and let it run until it stops. Don't panic when the car shuts off on its own. That's supposed to happen.

    • 3

Disconnect the negative cable from the car's battery.

    • 4

Disconnect the fuel intake and fuel return lines from the fuel filter, located under the car near the gas tank.

    • 5

Replace the fuel filter and attach the fuel intake and return to the new fuel filter. Do not mistakenly switch the lines as this will cause serious harm.

    • 6

Replace the fuel intake tube on your pressure regulator and reconnect the negative battery cable.
