How to Drive a Scooter

A motor scooter is relatively simple to drive. It is similar to a motorcycle, except you won't be able to drive it as fast (but can get better gas mileage). Since a scooter is a two-wheeled vehicle with no side protection, safety while driving is imperative; taking a class in motorcycle/scooter safety is recommended. You also need to have the appropriate license; this can require a separate license or just your standard driver's license, depending on the state you live in.

Instructions

    • 1

Have the proper safety equipment for riding, such as a helmet, which is required to be worn by law in most states. Gloves, pants and a jacket made of durable material will also help make for a safer ride.

    • 2

Climb onto the scooter and sit with both feet planted on the floorboard. At a full stopped and locked position, the scooter should be balanced on its stand from the rear with the rear wheel suspended above the ground; the front wheel and handlebars should be turned to the left and locked in that position.

    • 3

Insert the key into the ignition switch below the handlebars. It should be slanted at a northeast to southwest position. Push the key into the switch and turn it clockwise to the "off" position, unlocking the front wheels so you can turn the handlebars.

    • 4

Turn the handlebars so the front wheel faces forward, then push the scooter forward--pushing off of the ground with one foot--to free the rear wheel from the stand.

    • 5

Turn the key once more into the "on" position, then press and hold the ignition button below the right handlebar to start the engine.

    • 6

Twist the right handlebar to accelerate the scooter while holding onto both handlebars at all times, unless you stick out your hand to indicate a turn. Turn the handlebars in the direction you want to turn.

    • 7

Apply both brake handles at the same time to slow down and stop the scooter. Applying just one can damage the brakes.

    • 8

Shut the engine off by turning the key from the "on" to the "off" position, then turn the front wheel as far to the left as you can and turn the key counterclockwise to lock the wheel. Set the scooter on its stand by lifting the rear end up by the seat and luggage rack while pushing the stand downward with your foot.

This article doesn't talk about counter steering. You can't just turn the handles, you have to lean into a turn. And applying one break won't ruin the breaks. You can apply the back break first, slowly, and then apply the front break. Jamming the front break may cause the wheel to lock up and you'll tumble. This person doesn't appear to know how to drive a scooter.
