How to Properly Fit Snowshoes

Snowshoes are the perfect footwear for exploring the scenic outdoors in the perfect white of winter. If they fit improperly, however, snowshoes may not do their jobs the way they should, which can result in accidents, trips, falls, injuries and emergencies. Whether for back-country exploring, racing, trekking or just wandering around in the snow, be sure your snow shoes fit your feet the way they should.

1. Weigh yourself on an accurate scale. This measurement is crucial to finding the right size snow shoe.

2. Using your weight measurement, determine the length snow shoes you should consider. Ideally if you are between 80 and 160 pounds, you should have a snow shoe between 20 and 22 inches long. If you weigh more than 160, you should have a snow shoe between 23 and 25 inches.

3. Loosen the straps on the snow shoes. Place your heel in the heel cup, and be sure the ball of your foot fits comfortably on the rotation strap.

4. Tighten the straps of the snow shoe until your foot fits snugly and without movement when walking.

5. Test out the snow shoes before buying to be certain they are the correct size and style for your purposes.
