How to Get Alimony Support. If you have recently been divorced, you may be entitled to what's called "alimony" or spousal support. This money is separate from child support. This money is used to support an ex-spouse in the unfortunate event of a divorce. Here are some general steps to take if you think you should receive alimony.

Instructions

First, alimony is determined by need. If you are employed and making around the same as your ex, your need for alimony will be very low. However, if you have a much lesser paying job or have been a homemaker with no job skills or career prospects, your need for alimony will be much higher. You must show the Court that you are unable to immediately enter the workforce to provide for yourself.

Next, if you are unable to work to support yourself or unable to return to school to learn a trade, you should mention this. Depending on the length of the marriage and how long you have been unable to earn income and been supported by your ex, your ability to get alimony support is much higher.

Next, if you have supported your ex while they worked on a professional degree (such as law, medicine, accounting) and supported them while they did so, you could even be entitled to some of their future earnings. Even staying home and keeping house/taking care of children counts and you could be entitled to alimony payments. Bring this up during any alimony discussions whether during mediation or in front of a judge.

Finally, consult an attorney regarding alimony laws in your state. Remember, alimony payments will sometimes be limited to a specific number of years or until you remarry.
