How to Choose a Divorce Attorney or Lawyer
Divorce is one of the most significant events in your life, and picking the right person to represent you is essential. Although recommendations from family and friends can be a good starting point, you must do your research to find a lawyer who has the specialization and temperment you need. Ask yourself and your potential attorney important questions so that you make the best match.

1
If you do not have recommendations, visit professional organizations for lawyers in general or family law in particular. For example, visit the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (aaml.org) or the Bar Association in your state.
-
2
Interview potential lawyers. Many lawyers offer a free consultation, so take pertinent documents -- bills or property deeds, for example -- with you.

3
Make sure that your lawyer specializes in divorce or family law. If your case involves children or will be particularly complicated, seek a board-certified lawyer, who must participate in continuing education. Understand that such a lawyer likely will cost more.
-
4
Make sure you feel comfortable with your lawyer's approach. For example, if you seek or anticipate a contentious separation, go with a lawyer who is inclined to fight. On the other hand, if the dissolution of your marriage could be amicable, pick a lawyer who is good at mediating.
-
5
If you anticipate a court trial, make sure your potential lawyer has court experience.
