How to Maintain a Happy Marriage

How to Maintain a Happy Marriage thumbnail
When you marry another person, you are committing yourself.

Nearly 50 percent of marriages end in divorce, according to the National Institutes of Health. Some couples choose to end a marriage when problems arise, rather than learning how to cope with them and solve them together. While divorce rates are rising, it is still possible to maintain a happy marriage with your spouse. In order for a marriage to work, you must make the effort to work through the rough times with your spouse.

Instructions

Learn how to deal with conflicts. While it is normal for marital partners to disagree, it is important to know how to deal with these conflicts effectively. If you are angry at your partner about something, bring it up to him in a polite way. Instead of yelling or calling him names, you can say, "I am really upset that you came home late last night, and did not bother to call me." If you feel like you are about to explode with anger, go into another room for a few minutes to calm yourself down.

Avoid complaining about every little thing your spouse does. For example, if she forgot to put her shoes away, do not make a big deal about it. Also refrain from bringing up things your spouse did many years ago. Dwelling on her mistakes will only make her upset with you.

Remind your spouse about how much he means to you. Small gestures, such as giving him a back massage after work or bringing him breakfast in bed, can go a long way in showing him how much you care. Additionally, always support your spouse in whatever he does. For example, if he wants to go back to school, tell him that he can do anything he sets his mind to.

Spend time together. With so much time spent working and taking care of children, some couples forget to make time for each other. Make an effort to spend time with one another almost every day. For example, go for a 20-minute walk together after work or go grocery shopping together.
