When buying a turkey there can be many different definitions of terms you will see. Different turkeys are appropriate for different people and preparation. Here are the majority of the terms and what they mean.

  1. Step 1

    Fresh -

    A turkey labels fresh, is one that has never been stored under 26 degrees.

  2. Step 2

    Organic -

    An organic turkey is one that meets the government standards to be able to us this term. The turkey was feed organically certified feed and not genetically engineered in any way. also the turkey was not given any antibiotics.

  3. Step 3

    Kosher -

    A kosher turkey is one that been processed under rabbinical supervision. You may want to check the label for any additional salt.

  4. Step 4

    Free roaming or free range -

    These turkeys had continuous free access to the outdoors for more then half of their life.

  5. Step 5

    Natural -

    A natural turkey has been minimally processed with synthetic or artificial hormones or ingredients. These turkeys are also not typically basted or marinating. These turkeys are ideal for being brined yourself. Natural turkeys will explain on the packaging exactly what is natural about them.

  6. Step 6

    Basted or self basting -

    These turkeys are pre-injected or marinated with different ingredients. The ingredients will be listed on the packaging. The turkey can be marinated or basted with a variety of items including broth. mixture of salt, fats, and flavorings which also help to make the turkey nice and moist. If you plan on brining your own turkey avoid basted or self basted turkey as it may end up on the overly salty side.
