DVDs and CDs and great technology, but children can easily turn that collection into a collection of scratched junk. The kids really don't mean to, they just don't know how to take care of the DVDs and CDs so they last. Sharing these steps with your child can help to save hundreds of dollar spent on buying the DVDs and CDs again. Taking care of CDs and DVDs is really easy; they just need to know how and slow down to take care of the disc.

It would be a great idea to back up the CDs or DVDs. The children could use the back up copies, while you have the originals. Here is a great article to show How to back up a copy of a DVD: http://www.ehow.com/how_5078066_back-up-copy-dvd.html

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • CDs or DVDs
  1. Step 1

Tell the children how to properly handle DVDs and CDs is a great way to start. Always hold a CD or DVD with one finger in the middle hole and another finger on the outside edge of the disc. Finger prints can cause a DVD or CD to get stuck or Skip. Oils from a person fingers can over time where into the disc and ruin the CD or DVD.

  2. Step 2

Always put the CD or DVD back into the case. This is the biggest way that CDs and DVDs get ruin. Leaving the disc out unprotect will allow dust to collect on the disc. The dust may look harmless but will leave scratch when it is cleaned off. By making sure the discs are always put away not only keep the room clean but provides that necessary protection the DVDs and CDs need.

  3. Step 3

Give the children some of their very own disc. Backups would work great as a first disk and cases can usually be bought cheaply at Video Rental stores. Another way is to start with the cheaper DVDs and CDs. If they ruin the disc, make them work to earn to replace the disc. Of course this should be based upon the child's age for what and how much they should help out around the house to replace the disc.

  4. Step 4

Clean the disc with a soft cloth. Never rub the disc with your shirt. Kids always seem to grab what is the closest to them. Although the end of a shirt is handy the ruff material could damage the DVD or CD.
