Step 1
Plan your bargains. It's perfectly OK to shop ahead of time (online or with newspaper circulars) to see the items you want to buy and find out when they're at a good price.. Shopping ahead of time without going into the store may help you plan better what you want to buy and help you assess if you really need those items.
For the holidays, try a website like theblackfriday.com to spot discounts ahead of time (see Resources below). -
Step 2
Step back from the item. Once you are emotionally charged at the thought of getting such a steal, back off! Doing this helps you regain control and helps your brain relax a bit and fall into a more practical mode. If you still think you need the item after walking away, by all means, go back and get it.
This is hard on days like Black Friday when there are timed sales and everything is a huge rush, but not every item is doomed to fly off the shelves, so only pick something up if you need it and it's a smart deal--and if it won't be there when you turn back around.
Another good step is to ask yourself if you would really want the item if no one else did. -
Step 3
Don't let kids run the show. Most parents would walk over water if they could to get the item their child desires--especially for the holidays. Keep in mind the example you set for your child when you do exactly as they want and always fulfill their desires. Think about whether or not it would be a wise time to tell them "no" and reward them with time spent doing something memorable instead. Saying "no" can be one of the most valuable lessons you teach as a parent.
-
Step 4
Visualize. Imagine the item not being on sale and ask yourself if you would want it just as much. Then visualize it at its sale price, but imagine that's the regular price. Would you still want it? Taking the time to "talk" to yourself could stop you from making impulsive purchases
-
Step 5
Enjoy shopping. No one says you can't enjoy getting a bargain--you don't want to take all of the fun out of it, because getting a good deal is exciting. Try to limit things so you don't regret buying them later--otherwise, shop on, bargain hunters!

on 11/16/2009 I love bargain shopping, but rarely make it to the mall anymore. Why should I? Second-hand and resale shops are awesome!
