Step 1
Research the TMJ dentists in your area. Getting a reference or two will make the chance of finding the right specialist more likely.
-
Step 2
Set up an appointment and remember you are interviewing your dentist just as much as being the patient. You will want to feel comfortable with the dentist you choose and feel you are not only being cared for properly, but respected and educated on your TMJ problem and treatment possibilities
-
Step 3
If you can, spend a little time studying up about joint dysfunction and TMJ so you will know what questions to ask.
-
Step 4
Ask those questions. TMJ can manifest differently with different people and your treatment will likely look different from someone else’s.
-
Step 5
If you are happy with your TMJ dentist, you will probably be taking multiple trips for treatment. Follow all your medical instructions and find out what to expect on your next trip so there will be no uncomfortable surprises.
-
Step 6
TMJ or Temporomandibular Joint problems are not rare and if not too much damage has occurred to the joint, you may be able to care for your jaw problem with no more than wearing a mouth guard at night. If more treatment is necessary, just keep communications open and take each trip one at a time. Worry and stress will exacerbate discomfort.
-
Step 7
Choosing a good TMJ dentist and handling each trip to the dentist openly and confidently, one at a time will make the treatment as comfortable as possible.
