Moles can be very destructive animals to your yard and garden, digging through the ground and uprooting established lawns and plants. There are several ways of getting rid of moles, including killing them, which can be done through poisons, traps and other devices. The most effective method, however, and one that will keep you from harming the environment and other animals, is using traps designed specifically for moles, like the harpoon, tunnel choke or Victor scissors.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Moles
  • Hand trowel
  • Mole trap
  1. Step 1

Limit the amount of watering you do in your yard while trying to get rid of the moles. This can reduce their food supply and possibly starve them out.

  2. Step 2

Locate an active mole tunnel by looking at your lawn after you have mowed and when you have the most sunlight, for any signs of ridges running in a straight line.

  3. Step 3

Step on the tunnel to collapse it and then see if the tunnel is reopened within 2 days.

  4. Step 4

Carefully dig down with a hand trowel into the active tunnel and place a mole trap inside the tunnel, then cover the area with branches or material that will block out the sunlight while also giving you quick access to the traps.

  5. Step 5

Check the traps routinely, adjusting the positioning until the mole has been caught and killed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be aware that there are some states where killing moles is illegal. Check your state's animal rights regulations for specific information.
